Things That Go Bump and Ring In The Night

We have a white noise machine thingy in our bedroom... we used to have an air filter that made a ton of noise and we got used to it. After a while we stopped using it becasue we read somewhere that such filters realeased ozone into the air air or something like that and did more harm than good.

Once we stopped using it though we discovered we cannot sleep without the noise of it. It masked all the other noises in the house and we found ourselves waking up in the night saying "What was that?" or "Did you hear that?" So we bought a white noise machine thingy.

Last night I woke up at 4:28am to a new sound. It sounded like a large crackling flame or an army of rats scurrying across our hardwood floors. Neither of which I wanted in our new home. The smoke alarms were not going off so it was probably nothing. I lay there for a moment and knew I would not be able to get to sleep if I didn't get up and check what it was.

I tried not to wake Ron up... really I did. Our bedroom door squeeks and I'm afraid it did wake Ron up. Turns out the noise was the sound of hail or freezing rain hitting the skylights in the livingroom. It was really loud and weirdly enough it stopped for a moment when I opened the bedroom door.

So there we are, awake. After about a half an hour we are both almost back to sleep when the phone rang. Now I don't know about you but when the phone rings between the hours of 12am and 7am it is usually not good news. Fortunately this was just a wrong number, but it's enough to get your heart and mind racing. In that split second a thousand bad things go through your head. It took me a while to get back to sleep after that.
