What is it about the word moist?

What is it about the word moist? I now know of three different women who have issues with this word. They do not like this word at all. One of them would have a small hissy fit at the utterance of this word... I'm not sure how the other two would react if taken unawares... perhaps I shall sneak up on them and whisper moist in their ear.

Is it a female thing? Would psychiatrists say that it is a fear of ones own arousal? Would the male equivelant be to dislike the word hard? Is the loathing of words a normal behavior? It doesn't sound normal to me, but then, I like words. This blog is proof of that.

But why moist? Moist is such a great word! Without moist you are left with... well, dry. Cake wouldn't be the same without moist. Neither would soil. Sponges wouldn't be nearly as interesting if they weren't moist. Not that sponges are interesting mind you... but you get the idea. You could use the word damp instead of moist, but it just isn't the same now is it?

The mouth makes some interesting movements when you say the word moist out loud. Go on... try it. It's almost like kissing the air. Is this the root of this strange word behavior? And the irony of this is subtle... you really wouldn't want to kiss someone if your lips weren't moist, now would you? Lip balm companies are banking on this... a whole industry based on creating moistness.

There is a word for the the fear of certain words or names: Onomatophobia. The fact that there is a word for leads me to believe it is more common than one would think. There is also a word for the fear of liquids, dampness or moisture and it is Hygrophobia. Perhaps the word moist represents two separate issues.

Am I the only one who thinks that this is weird? Are there other words that people don't like or fear, or is it just something about the word moist?

When you live in the south, "moist" is a fact of life.

"Kissing the air" is, incidently, a great phrase.

Sounds like these women need to get a serious grip on them selves.

Well, I for one feel that could help.....but if they have issues with the word "moist", imagine they guilt they would feel for 'gripping' themselves......

So to speak.

Actually, someone else needs to get a serious grip on them, but I don't guess they get much of that, either.

Do they have a reason for disliking the word "moist". Is it like the word "cunt"? Do they think it's socially unacceptable? Offensive? Bad? Good?

What do they call a nice... well, moist, cake?

Grow up...
